January has flown by and we in Rochester barely got any snow. Lucky us. Today I thought I would share a program provided by the National American Needlepoint Guild titled "The Stitch of the Month." This a way of introducing our members and others to new stitches. This year it will be done by introducing new stitches that are part of a piece called Feuilles d' ananas ( Pineapple Leaves) which was designed by Susan Hoekstra.
In addition to learning new stitches this piece is designed to help learn about color values. So if you ever said (like I have) I wish I knew more about color theory this is an excellent way to get started.
While you are provided with the thread list for the model colorway you are free to create your own. What is your favorite color? Design this piece around that.

The design is divided up into sections and each month instructions are given to complete one or more sections.

An introduction to the piece and the fiber selection for the model colorway can be found at the national ANG website by going to the following link:

http://www.needlepoint.org/StitchOfTheMonth/2016/SOTM201601_Introduction.pdf

Even though it is the end of the month it will be easy to catch up. The only section to be done in January is the center block (1).

For directions for the January block go to the following link:

http://www.needlepoint.org/StitchOfTheMonth/2016/SOTM201601.pdf

If you are looking to try something new and exiting for the new year and also extend your knowledge of needlepoint stitches you may want to try this piece.

If I didn't already have so many projects started I would head to my stash to see if I have a piece of canvas the right size and a color of thread to base this piece on. I hope some of you try this piece. If you do bring it to our meeting each month to show off the previous month's progress. It will be fun to compare.

It is called the Fourth of July Flag and it is designed by The Collection Designs. You can see more of their designs at http://www.thecollectiondesigns.com/flagsfourth-of-july.html.

She purchased the canvas at the Wool and Willow in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. You can see more about the shop by visiting their web page at http://www.woolandwillow.com/dev/.

The stitch selections are by Barbara. She has almost completed all of the white background which she is doing in the Nobuko stitch.
Today I want to share a piece Patty finished this week called Christmas Flowers designed by Mindy with a stitch guide provided by Aristeia Needlepoint in Santa Monica, Ca. If you want to see more of what they offer you can visit them on the web by going to http://www.aristeianeedlepoint.com/.
It is constructed with a variety of different threads which lend it texture as well as a color palette that remind one of the Caribbean. While this geometric piece looks straight forward putting the center design elements on point makes the stitching challenging.

This would give us all an opportunity to see the variety of projects our members work on.

Today I would like to show off a painted canvas by Melissa Shirley that a number of our members are stitching. They started it as a class at Lori's shop, Expressions In NeedleArts back in May of 2015.

While they are all at different points you can see from this canvas the rich colors and textures that stitch guide introduces. This is a challenging canvas but according to those stitching it a wonderful learning experience.
It was designed by Mary Beale in 1996 and is called the Boston Tea Party. Here is some more information for anyone who wants to know more about it or perhaps stitch it. Her chart is designed to be done in needlepoint on 18 count canvas or cross stitched over two on 30 count evenweave or linen.

One person wrote an extensive entry in her blog about the piece which you can see here: http://carolinastitcher.blogspot.com/2015/07/mary-beale-tea-cozy-and-more.html
If after seeing pictures and reading about it you would like to stitch it you can get the chart for $5.00 at Mary Beale's online shop at : http://www.marybeale.com/shop/miscellaneouscharts.htmlUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2789919523563334807.post-48662713775727081852015-10-04T08:10:00.000-04:002015-10-04T08:10:29.077-04:00Reminder For Our October 14th Meeting

This year we participated in the fiber festival. It is the largest fiber festival this side of the Hudson River and many fiber guilds are represented. Our chapter of ANG plus the local chapter of EGA participated. We displayed various types of needlework from embroidery, counted canvas, blackwork, painted canvas and more!
Here's an excerpt from the pamphlet: "The Finger Lakes Fiber Festival educates the public about fiber and its sources, promotes small farms, supports fiber artists and fiber-related businesses, and provides a venue for the public to interact with the fiber arts world.. By sharing skills and knowledge with the public through demonstrations and workshops, the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival is sowing the seeds for future generations of fiber artists and craftspeople.. Our festival features great vendors, with everything you need for fiber arts: raw fleece, roving, spinning supplies, needle felting supplies, dyes, yarns, items needed to knit, crochet, weave—and things you won’t know you need until you see them—not to mention unique, one-of-a-kind, handmade finished items!."

When we weren't sitting at our booth we roamed around the many buildings to shop the colorful goods, be amazed at the beautiful yarns and talked to other guild members. A group of spinners were in the booth next to us and were mezmerized by their yarn spinning. They looked so calm and peaceful spinning wool into yarn! Enjoy the photos.
We welcomed the new officers and said thank you to the outgoing board. Barb, Judy and I had a great four years but the day came when we stepped aside for the new crew. A surprise party awaited us as we walked into the meeting. It was so festive as you can see by the photos. The cake even has our logo! Thank you to all the members who made the evening so special.

The 1st photo is of an ANG Stitch of the Month. It is a work in progress and two members are stitching on the same piece. They take turns switching off each month. What a fun idea! They chose their own colors and how beautiful to see it change each month as they bring it in.

Next is a pink counted canvas piece in a white box.

The abstract flowers is a Mindy canvas, the stitchers interpreted the stitches herself.

The last photos are of a coral done in a technique called, "messy beading". There are different sized beads to give it a coral texture. The photo doesn't do a good job of showing the background.

We'll focus on painted canvas this season with programs on adding Bling to your canvas, ribbon embroidery and long/short stitch on canvas.

We're not forgetting counted work, though. We're doing a fun 2-part program on Blackwork. There were lots of finishes for the Show & Share segment of the meeting. A variety of needlework including, linen work, painted canvas, counted canvas, and goldwork.
We kept it cool with an ice cream social at the meeting. While we sat, enjoying our treat, each member was asked to offer a piece of needlework advice. There are so many but here are some highlights:

> Stitch for as long as you want, can be 10 min or 10 hours
> Stitch with a friend
> Stitching sets you free
> If you're not having fun, don't do it
> Must breathe, don't hold your breath, get up and move around, wash hands periodically and don't eat while stitching
> Never let threads dangle, always leave on top of your work
> Take photos of your work as you go along.

Some finishes to enjoy:
No pattern or diagrams! The Buffalo ANG Chapter "Western NY Needlepointers" invited us to lead their group in a creative Speed Round Robin. Each member had to bring a 4" or 5" square of 18ct mono canvas and some different colored threads from their stash. This is a timed excercise and it begins by telling them the first step to stitch the outline of the Aquarium then they have 4 minutes to stitch. When the time is up, we ring a bell and they pass their canvas to the person on their left. Again, we tell them the next thing to stitch within a certain time, then RING! PASS YOUR CANVAS! You can choose any theme, we just liked the Aquarium. Everyone quickly got the idea that this is fun and stitched some very imaginative scenes. You can see crustaceons, treasure chests, plant life, anchors, fishing hooks and more.
Knots have been used in all kinds of needlework for centuries. They add texture and variety to our needlework. The French knot and Colonial knot are commonly used in our contemporary needlework, but I've read there are over 100 kinds of knots. We learned a few knot stitches, some you know and one or two you may knot (pun intended). Have you heard of the "Gordian", "Sorbello" or "Turks Head"? <span style="font-family: "Comic Sans MS"; font-size: 11pt;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Also learned the the “Forbidden Stitch” as it's known in China.
They're inspiring and fun to see the colors change as you stitch. Barbara's presentation taught us about the different kinds of over-dyes (Tone-on-Tone, Shadow Dye, Variegated, Heather, Tie-dye, Tweed, etc). On the left is a photo of the threads she used to show us the differences.

There are silks, cotton, linen, wool, soy, metallic and ribbon. They each present different challenges for dyeing.

You can see different effects when stitching with overdyes, depending you use the strands in a needle and which stitches you use.

Here are some suggested books for reference:
"Colorful Stitches for Over-dye Thread", by June McKnight, 2010, self published.
"Getting the Most Out of Overdyed Threads", part One, by Catherine Jordan, Needle Pointers September 2006
"The Thread Thesaurus", 2002, Thread Techique Team LLC, Ann Caswell, Suzanne Howren, Beth Robertson
